Naina Devi temple is one of the popular religious destinations of India situated in the Nainital district of Himachal Pradesh state. It is one of the 52 shakti peethas (holy places of cosmic power) of India. The temple of Naina Devi is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Since ages large number of devotees comes here to offer prayers to the Goddess. This beautiful temple is situated atop Naina hillock at a height of 1100 meters above sea level.
According to the legend it is the place where Sati’s eye fell. Based on the legend it is said that Sati the consort of Lord Shiva killed herself by jumping in the sacrificial fire when her father Daksha Prajapati insulted her husband. This incident enraged Lord Shiva who started wandering the entire universe with the 새티스파이어 body of Sati in his arms. Because of anger Lord Shiva started destroying the whole universe which brought turmoil among Gods. To stop the destruction Lord Vishnu dismembered the dead body of Sati into various parts. The places where the body parts fell became the Shakti Peethas. There are 52 places where the body parts of the Sati fell. It is believed that Sati’s eye fell at this place which gave this temple its name Naina Devi.
